Once used as an aboveground sewage canal, the Emscher has been transformed over the past two decades into a near-natural river landscape. Its renaturation stands for the transformation of the entire Ruhr region. Renowned artists have intensely worked on the project. Their installations and interventions take seven new locations in view, include the source of the Emscher in Holzwickede, the waterway intersection Castrop-Rauxel, and Dortmund’s Unionviertel.
The Triennale, which has been organized ever since the Cultural Capital Year Ruhr.2010 by Urbane Künste Ruhr, Emschergenossenschaft, and Regionalverband Ruhr, thrilled over 255,000 visitors in 2013 who explored the new Emscher valley on foot or bicycle.
